ARTISTS STATEMENT:
My paintings are constructions in which states
of mind are mysteriously communicated.
The decisions made on the blank surface are an attempt to express emotion
that may be known or not yet identifiable. While my work is primarily an
evolution of the unconscious, I am oftentimes influenced by political or
cultural events.
I am intrigued by collage elements of cloth, paper, old photographs and how
they lead a path to the final piece. Similarly, many of the paintings
involve rubbing, scratching, and removing paint to create texture and
layering – also a path of mystery and unfolding that takes me to the next
step. Only later do I begin to understand what the final painting might
mean.
The immediacy and honesty of self taught or primitive artists is a huge
inspiration in my work. I adore Cy Twombly, Howard Hodgkins, Anselm Keifer,
Bill Traylor, Diane Arbus and Robert Frank.
